Burmatex

Burmatex® is one of the UK’s leading designers and manufacturers of contract carpet tiles & planks. Product ranges span multilevel loop, loop pile, structure bonded®, fibre bonded, cut pile and carpets in sheet and tiles, as well as performance barrier system and entrance matting products.

Burmatex traces its origins back to 1912, when J. F. Burrows began operations at Victoria Mills in Ossett, West Yorkshire. Originally focused on processing textile waste, it gradually evolved—introducing its first carpet via reclaimed fibres in 1967, expanding through the 1970s and 1980s into tufted carpet and tile manufacture. The brand “Burmatex” emerged in 1972, under the umbrella of AIREA plc, and remains based at the same site to this day.

Product Range & Applications
Today, Burmatex is among the UK’s leading designers and manufacturers of contract carpet tiles, planks, sheets, and entrance matting. Their portfolio spans multilevel loop, loop pile, structure bonded®, fibre bonded, cut pile, barrier systems, and entrance matting, serving diverse sectors such as education, commercial, hospitality, public buildings, retail, residential, and even the Ministry of Defence.

Design Innovation & Sustainability Leadership
In 2022, Burmatex formalised its eco²matters sustainability framework, reaffirming its commitment to environmental responsibility. They’ve innovated aggressively: all products now employ Thrive matter, the world’s first carbon-negative recycled yarn, and their exclusive BioBase™ recycled backing system, developed alongside Huddersfield University, containing at least 77% recycled content. These materials support Class 33 heavy commercial use and offer carbon-neutral certifications for ranges such as Arctic, Osaka, Dapple, and Balance Collection.

Burmatex runs its entire Ossett facility on 100% certified renewable electricity. In 2023, they topped it off with solar panels that generate enough power to run over 6,000 average UK homes for a year. Moreover, their Project Zero Landfill initiative has eliminated waste sent to landfill. Today, 97% of waste is recycled, with the remainder converted to energy for local social housing. The company’s dedication to sustainability recently earned it the Yorkshire Business of the Year sustainability award in 2025, highlighting their impactful circular economy efforts, low-carbon innovations, and waste minimisation strategies.

Quality Assurance & Future Growth
Burmatex adheres to rigorous standards, maintaining ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications for quality and environmental management. Additionally, they provide a 15-year warranty across all product lines. A strategic £5 million investment in automation, AI-driven inspection, and expanded capacity is underway, aimed at further improving sustainability and production capabilities by 2025.

Burmatex combines deep UK heritage and comprehensive manufacturing with cutting-edge sustainable practice and quality-driven innovation. Their continuously expanding, carbon-neutral flooring ranges, supported by strong environmental credentials and long-term warranties, make them a compelling choice for contractors, specifiers, and architects prioritising performance, design, and responsibility.
